Health by Numbers: Busting the Myths around Big Data and Healthcare in Europe

This panel discussion brings together policy, research and practice in E-health with a particular focus on understanding the current state of the art in research and how research interacts with the policy landscape.
24th May 2017 from 10.00 to 13.00, followed by lunch at London House (Rue du Trône 108, Brussels).

  • How can academic research in computer science help policy-makers manage the emerging reality of modern healthcare needs and possibilities across the Europe?
  • How can we create realistic expectations of what the use of Big Data in healthcare can achieve?
  • Is it often held up as a quick fix, without really understanding the nature of what it is policy makers are trying to do?
  • How can we create predictive models based on contemporary human behaviour when public knowledge of themengenders behavioural change?

The panel is split into two parts: The research and the policy framework.

10:05-10:30 Keynote address and Questions - Outlining the Commission's view of the current landscape of Big Data and Healthcare, Tapani Piha, Head of Cross Border Healthcare and eHealth Unit, DG Santé

10:30-11:30 Panel one - Panellists will discuss their research, and their different experiences in the field from their respective disciplinary approaches

11:30-11:45 Break Coffee and Tea

11:45-12:45 Panel two Panellists will discuss the policy context in which their research operates, for example ethics, data protection, risk resilience, data sharing etc.

12:45 – 12:50 Summary of discussion and closing remarks

12:50 – 13:50 Lunch - A light sandwich networking lunch will be provided
