London HE Research Directors’Delegation to Brussels - Engaging with the EU to help shape the research agenda

On 2-3 March London Higher Europe is bringing over a delegetion of senior research leaders from London to Brussels. Its aim is to demonstrate to EU officials the value London HEIs place on EU funding and to help ensure proposals involving London academics are well received in the future.

As domestic research budgets continue to become more concentrated it is becoming increasingly important for UK universities to look to EU sources of funding. Whilst the quality of research remains the final arbiter of funding success, other UK regions and EU member States invest considerable effort in engaging with the EU research executive ahead of, during, and after funding calls, the better to have their institutions recognised by the EU. This two-day mission to Brussels is targeted at senior research leaders across London. Its aim is to demonstrate to EU officials the value London HEIs place on EU funding and to help ensure proposals involving London academics are well received in the future.

The delegation is intended for senior research leaders from London HEIs and delegates will benefit from and intensive programme which includes a private meeting with António Vicente, Commissioner Moedas’ Head of Cabinet and other senior members of his Cabinet; an address from Robert Madelin, Senior Adviser for Innovation in the European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC); a dinner reception hosted by MEP Mary Honeyball; a meeting with Robert-Jan Smits, Director-General of DG Research as well as a private meeting with Pablo Amor, Director of the European Research Council and his senior staff.
