Did you know there’s more to EU funding programmes than Horizon 2020?

On Thursday the 9th of February 2017 London Higher Europe hosted a half-day information event for its members focused on alternative sources of European funding outside of Horizon 2020, the EU’s main research and innovation programme.

The aim of the day was to find out more about how universities could apply for, and be successful in, less well-known programmes where the focus of the funding is not on pure research.

In attendance were both academics and research managers from among the London Higher Europe membership, who participated in an open discussion with UK government contact points from the Connecting Europe Facility, INTERREG North Western Europe and Life+ programmes.

The discussion revealed certain peculiarities with each funding stream that provided our members with key insights to increase the chances of successful application. For example in the INTERREG programme Emily Shepard noted how “interdisciplinary, although being central to many other EU funding programmes, is not advantageous in INTERREG due to the focused nature the three pillars approach.”

About the three programmes:

The Connecting Europe Facility is an infrastructure programme in which previous university involvement has focused on niche research for the implementation of the EU’s infrastructure policies for land, sea and air.

The LIFE+ programme has an environmental focus and previous university-led initiatives include laser fences, awareness-raising programmes and wildlife conservation projects.

INTERREG is a broader programme structured around the three pillars ofinnovation, low carbon and resource and material efficiency.

Furthermore participants were handed concise introductions to four other EU funding programmes, which are available for download:

Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme 2014-2020

European Union funding for External Relations

Erasmus Plus 2014-2020

European Health Programme 2014-2020

The event took place at Garden Halls in Bloomsbury, central London.Universities In attendance were Birkbeck, Brunel, LSBU, SOAS, the University of East London, the University of Greenwich, the University of West London, the University of Westminster and University of the Arts London.
